Electrical Training and Apprentice Licensing

This information is provided to help clear up apparent misunderstandings with some apprentices and some employers.

It is probably clearly understood that a person needs to be licensed to do electrical work (above 50Volts DC, 115Volts AC). Obviously they also need to be trained for that work. The confusion seems to arise when some people believe that the act of signing up a new apprentice to a Training Contract (or of signing off an apprentice at the end of a Training Contract) fulfils licensing requirements. THIS IS NOT the case. The licensing process is completely separate and application needs to be made by the apprentice to the Electrical Workers & Contractors Licensing Board immediately on Training Contract sign up (commencement) or sign off (completion). Contact details for the EW&CLB appear below.

If an apprentice has not applied for (on a form 10) and received an "Apprentice Registration Card" from the EW&CLB then they are working Illegally

If an apprentice completed their apprenticeship (and is signed off) their "Apprentice Registration Card" is no longer valid. If they have not applied for their full license then they are working illegally! This means that apprentices should prepare and lodge their applications for their full license as soon as their employer signs Training Contract completion papers (even if the completion papers have not yet been processed by the Apprenticeship Centre.

Under the Electrical Workers and Contractors Act 2009, working illegally is a serious offence and can have significant consequences (fines and / or imprisonment) for both the worker and his / her employer.
