The three main sectors of the industry are residential furniture/furnishings, commercial (office or corporate) and hospitality (hotels, motels, resorts, etc).
Residential makes up about two thirds of production output.
Industry Sectors
The Australian furnishing industry has three main segments: the large furniture retailers and the manufacturers that supply them; the commercial furniture manufacturers, including architects/interior designers who deal with large commercial fit-outs and hospitality furnishing (e.g. hotels, motels, restaurants seating/tables, conference halls); and the many small manufacturers making wooden and upholstered furniture that supply the smaller retailers in the domestic market. Often this smaller company represents the craftsman entrepreneur.
In the Northern Territory, cabinet making, furniture upholstery, and specialist furniture manufacturing make up the majority of the industry.
