Week 13
Monday the 23rd of November and Tuesday the 24th of November – Anthony and Derek cut and welded the columns in place for the stage roof. The students excavated and cleaned up the site.
Wednesday the 25th of November – Only 3 students attended training today. Anthony demonstrated how to use the oxy-acetylene equipment. Students then practiced cutting techniques.
Thursday the 26th of November – Attendance is poor again with only a handful of students turning up for training. Another two columns were welded in place for the stage roof.
Anthony continued welding the columns to the base plates.
At the request of the CDEP Manager, Derek and the students assisted with the unloading of the weekly semi trailer delivery. Students down tools and Derek used the fork lift to unload the supplies from the semi trailers.
Please Note: Extra food and supplies are being brought out to Ngukurr before the impending wet season. The Roper and Wilton River become impassable during the wet season, and the only way into the community is by air. After the monsoons have passed the Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) may not open the roads for several months while they dry out.
Anthony and Derek spent the afternoon packing up tools and equipment as they are planning to drive in to Darwin for the weekend.
Friday the 27th of November – Long drive back to Darwin.
Week 14
Monday the 30th of November – Anthony drove back to Ngukurr, Derek is in Darwin for the week.
Tuesday the 1st of December through to Friday the 7th of December – Anthony and the students set up welding stations in preparation for welding activities throughout the week.
The students were taught how to set up the gas regulators and output settings used on the mig welders which they would be using during training. They were also shown various welding techniques i.e. horizontal, vertical, butt and corner fillet welds.
The students spent the rest of the week practicing these welds using a mig and arc welder.
Funeral
Students only worked for 2 hours on Wednesday the 2nd of December as there was a funeral in the community.
